Will an affordable green laser pointer work out OK for home interferometry?
Every time I go online looking for a decent laser to do some optical/interferometric/prismatic trickery with, I discover that any laser with a decent coherence length is some high-dollar laboratory-style giant that I would have to sell a bunch of important organs to afford…
Bearing in mind that I am dirt poor, what are my options?
the best option is a HeNe (Helium Neon) laser, but will still cost you a few hundred bucks for a cheap one.
All laser pointers do not have enough of a collimated beam to do anything useful with.

Where can I buy an affordable green laser pointer?
I was looking for a green laser pointer that could do cool stuff like: Pop a balloon or light a match.
I got mine in Taiwan for about $60 but I understand you can get the same thing in Mainland China for about $12. Mine died after about two weeks of very light use. Also, it claimed to be 100 mW which will easily pop balloons but I doubt it was more than 10 ~ 15 mW. I never tried it on a balloons but you could get a little smoke out of black electrical tape with it if you held it on it for about 15 seconds. I’m sure it would have popped balloons but would have been a little slow compared to what a real 100 mW would do.
I understand that these cheap ones over drive the diode trying to up the wattage rating. That’s probably what burned mine out so fast. Also many of them rate the power based on broad band and radiate a lot into the IR band making them more dangerous and less efficient for popping balloons etc.
http://www.wickedlasers.com/lasers/Spyder_III_Pro-84-37.html has a lot of nice lasers on it with a 50 mW "Spyder III Pro" for $197.97. They go up from there to the 500 mW for $2,997.97. I don’t know how good these are or if they would last longer than my cheap Taiwan one but I would hope so for this kind of money. The 100 mW is $297.97. You might try that one, I’m sure it would have no problem popping balloons. That web site has all sorts of cool laser products including more green ones plus blue ones.

DIY Green Laser Pointer mod resistor on opposite side than button turns 5mw to 35mw
A while back I bought a green laser from Hong Kong on Ebay, worked great. After watching the videos on this site I decided to boost mine up, which I did and it worked great. Actually was able to pop balloons with it. I eventually lost it (of course) but found another similar looking one at Fry’s Electronics here in Dallas, TX. They had black and silver, both looked exactly like the model I got from Hong Kong. The black on e was $10 more so I bought the silver (who cares). Anyway, When I returned home to mod this one, I found out it was different than my last one (my dumb didn’t look inside to check before I drilled, stupid stupid)
This design has the resistor on the opposite side of the board (opposite the button) so drill your hole accordingly.
(Again leaping before I looked, I drilled mine to far above the resistor, which made adjusting it a pain.) The fortunate thing was that since I drilled it in the wrong spot when I went to adjust the small screw on top of the variable resistor I touched the side of the case with the screw driver. Just like mag light flash lights the case is part of the circuit in these as well.
Long story short, the adjusting of the resistor didn’t really do anything, but grounding the top of the resistor to the side did the trick.
So in my vid you see a wire thats touching the top of the resistor inside the laser, and sticks out the hole i drilled, and is pressed down on the outer casing of the laser (grounding it to the case) Its glued for now but Ill solder it later.
Sorry about the blur photos but I’m sure you’ll get the idea.
Cant promise this mod will work for you but it did on this one. What I’m saying is if you jack yours up don’t come crying to me.
